2026 World Cup Qualifier: Troost-Ekong unfazed by Nigeria’s poor record vs Rwanda

By Dayo Awoniyi

As the Super Eagles gear up for a critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Friday, team captain William Troost-Ekong has downplayed concerns over Nigeria’s historically poor record in Kigali.

The Super Eagles have never beaten Rwanda in their home country, with all previous encounters ending in draws. Despite the team’s challenges in Kigali, Ekong insisted that the focus is on securing World Cup qualification rather than dwelling on past results.

“We have read about it in some places, but we are not bothered,” Ekong said, referring to Nigeria’s winless streak in Rwanda.

“I was part of the last game in Kigali, which ended in a 0-0 draw, but we know we can’t afford a draw this time. Our objective is clear: we need the three points to revive our campaign.

“We’re certainly not concerned with history or what happened before. Our priority is qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Ekong stated.

With a star-studded squad that includes the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze, Nigeria is determined to break their Kigali curse. The Super Eagles are hoping to overcome Rwanda and get their qualification bid back on track.

Ahead of the crucial match, all 23 invited players were present at Tuesday’s training session, and they will have their final preparations at the Amahoro Stadium on Thursday evening. The match will kick off at 6:00 PM Rwanda time (5:00 PM Nigeria time), with Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed officiating.

Friday’s match will mark the debut of newly appointed head coach Éric Sékou Chelle, who will lead the Super Eagles for the first time as they aim to strengthen their World Cup hopes.
