2026 World Cup Qualifiers: “I knew it was coming” – Tolu Arokodare reflects on Super Eagles’ call-up

By Wale Mustapha

Newly invited Super Eagles striker, Tolu Arokodare, has revealed that he was anticipating his maiden call-up to the senior national team after a stellar season with KRC Genk.

Despite his outstanding form for the Jupiler League side, where he has scored 17 goals and provided five assists in 30 league appearances, Arokodare had not been included in previous Super Eagles squads under interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.

The 24-year-old is now set to make his debut for Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with the Super Eagles facing Rwanda on Friday.

Speaking about his call-up, Arokodare expressed both surprise and gratitude, noting, “First, I was surprised, I felt very honoured to be mentioned among the 39 players. It was quite surprising.

“But I knew it was coming because I was doing pretty well, and I was hoping that it would come—and it did come. I feel like a winner already.”

The striker also shared that even if he hadn’t made the final 23-man squad, he would still consider the call-up a significant achievement. “Being in the final 23, I just feel really blessed and very grateful. It means a lot,” he added in an interview with NFF TV.

Arokodare is now focused on making the most of his opportunity as Nigeria looks to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
