2030 FIFA World Cup: Morocco and UK seal bilateral agreement

In a major advancement for the preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco and the United Kingdom formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday in Salé, close to Rabat. This agreement is designed to enhance bilateral cooperation in crucial areas associated with the tournament, such as sports infrastructure, transportation systems, and economic growth.

The MoU was executed by Fouzi Lekjaa, Morocco’s Minister Delegate for the Budget and President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), in conjunction with David Lammy, the UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. Lekjaa also holds a position as a member of the FIFA Council.

During his remarks from Rabat, Lammy highlighted the UK’s strategic interest in fostering stronger international collaborations. “Growth and prosperity will underpin our relationship with Morocco and beyond, helping forge new opportunities at home and abroad,” he stated, underscoring the agreement as part of London’s wider global engagement strategy.

In addition to sports, Lammy’s visit represented a significant geopolitical milestone as the UK officially declared its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan—a proposal that London regards as a credible and pragmatic resolution to the Western Sahara conflict.

Douglas Alexander, UK Minister for Trade Policy, reiterated the significance of Morocco as a gateway for British trade and investment. “Morocco is becoming an increasingly vital economic partner, especially as the UK seeks to grow its presence in emerging markets,” he commented.

This joint initiative embodies a mutual aspiration to elevate the 2030 FIFA World Cup beyond a mere sporting event. Both nations foresee the tournament as a venue for economic, social, and cultural opportunities.

The UK has pledged to share its technical know-how and to facilitate connections between Moroccan stakeholders and British firms experienced in managing major international events. The collaboration will encompass stadium construction, transport logistics, event management, and related sectors—la
