Jennifer Echegini inspires Florida State University to win NCAA College title

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria star, Onyi Echegini scored a goal to help Florida State University (FSU) emerge as champions of the NCAA College Women’s Soccer Tournament.

Her team recorded a 5-1 win against Stanford to complete a treble after initially winning the ACC Regular season championship and the season-ending ACC Championship.

Jordynn Dudley scored the opener for FSU in the 29th minute before Jody Brown doubled the lead for FSU a minute later.

Stanford wouldn’t go down easily but responded with a goal from Maya Doms six minutes into the second half.

Beatta Olsson restored FSU’s two-goal lead in the 58th minute before Brown’s second goal of the final match made it 4-1.

Echegini completed the rout with the fifth goal with six minutes remaining at the end of the game to round off a five-star display from the Seminoles.

She is expected to join the Italian side, Juventus after her studies in the United States of America (USA) to experience European football.

The FSU star has not played for Nigeria’s senior women’s national team since the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With the Super Falcons close to qualifying for another Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) next year, Echegini should make the team if available for selection.
