2023 CAF Awards: Nigeria make final three shortlist for Women’s Team of the Year

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team made the cut for the 2023 CAF Women’s Team of the Year accolade.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaigners made the list of three national women’s teams remaining in the category.

The nine-time African champions survived a tough Group A with Olympic champions, Canada, co-host Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.

Randy Waldrum’s led side played four games with three clean sheets including the Round of 16 ouster on penalties to European champions, England.

The West Africans remained the only African side to go unbeaten in the group stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The wonderful form continued for the West African side with victories in all four of their post-World Cup games against Ethiopia and Cape Verde to qualify for the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

They will contend with fellow Round of 16 African teams at the World Cup, South Africa, and Morocco for the 2023 CAF women’s team of the year.

African champions, South Africa reached the knockout stage of the World during their second appearance at the tournament.

Morocco also made it to the Round of 16 as debutants in Australia and New Zealand.
