Anderlin Mgbechi: From striker to goalkeeper, Delta Queens sensation eyes greatness

By Saheed Afolabi

Delta Queens’ shot-stopper, Anderlin Mgbechi, is determined to maintain her top form following her impressive performances for both club and country.

The Falconets goalkeeper gained prominence with her stellar displays during Delta Queens’ NWFL Premiership 2022/2023 title-winning campaign, where she kept 12 clean sheets, including a crucial last-minute penalty save against Naija Ratels in Abuja.

Known for her exceptional reflexes, Mgbechi has established herself as a penalty-saving specialist and commands her defense with authority, attributing her drive for success to her late mother, who was a steadfast support in her journey to the top.

Mgbechi shared how she transitioned from a striker to a goalkeeper, a move that ultimately brought her fame and accolades.

“The motivating factor behind my progress has been my late mum. She was my pillar of support, she went through a lot for me. Though she is no longer with us, her efforts will never be in vain. To honor her, I work hard to be where I am today,” she told nigeriafootball.ng exclusively.

“I was converted from being a goalkeeper to becoming an attacker by my late coach. He believed in my strength and ability at that time, and I did it for him. Following his departure from the team, I was encouraged to return to goalkeeping. I’m happy I could do both well, but goalkeeping has brought me glory, for which I am thankful.”

Winning the NWFL Premiership Best Goalkeeper award in 2023 was a turning point in her career, propelling her into the national team. “Winning the goalkeeper of the year award in 2023 really boosted my confidence. It shaped my career positively, leading to a national team call-up, which is every player’s dream. I thank Almighty God for this privilege.”

Despite modeling her career after Chiamaka Nnadozie, Mgbechi has her sights set on breaking limits and achieving greater results in the future.

“My ambition in life is to do well for myself and be a source of support to those in need. I want to encourage the younger generation and help them grow,” she continued.

“My role model is Chiamaka Nnadozie; she is a fantastic goalkeeper, and I’m following her path to become a renowned top goalkeeper in the world. In five years, I hope to see myself doing greater things, breaking limits, and achieving results.”
