Rumour Mills: Nigeria goalie Stanley Nwabali on brink of Morocco’s Raja Casablanca switch

By Wale Mustapha

Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, is set for a potential transfer to Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca, as the club prepares a formal bid to secure his services from South African side Chippa United.

According to Afrifooty, Raja are targeting the 29-year-old shot-stopper as part of a major squad overhaul following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish fifth in Morocco’s top-flight league, the Botola.

The Green Eagles are aiming to reinforce their squad ahead of the new season, and Nwabali has emerged as a key target.

Nwabali’s stock has risen sharply following his outstanding performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the final.

He further cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers during the 2023/2024 season with Chippa United, making 26 appearances and keeping nine clean sheets.

Despite speculation over a move last summer, Nwabali remained with the South African club, signing a new three-year deal and taking on the captain’s armband.

However, Raja Casablanca’s interest could signal a new chapter for the goalkeeper, especially as the Moroccan side looks to return to continental dominance.

Raja Casablanca, one of Africa’s most decorated clubs, has a storied history that includes 13 Botola titles, 9 Moroccan Throne Cups, and 3 CAF Champions League trophies.

They currently have another Nigerian, midfielder Moses Orkuma, in their ranks—potentially easing Nwabali’s transition should the move materialize.

Talks are ongoing, and a deal could be finalized in the coming weeks as Raja intensifies its recruitment drive.
