Ogun athletes fume over unpaid rewards as Governor Dapo Abiodun gifts ₦50m to Super Falcons

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, may have stirred discontent among athletes who represented the state at recent national competitions following his ₦50 million cash gift to the Nigeria’s senior women’s national team.

The governor made the donation on Monday to the nine-time African champions, who are in Abeokuta ahead of Tuesday’s 2026 WAFCON qualifier second leg against Benin Republic at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Kuto.

This comes just months after the Super Falcons received ₦30 million from the governor on June 3, 2025, following their friendly match against Cameroon in Abeokuta.

However, the gesture has reportedly angered Ogun State athletes who are yet to receive their promised rewards for winning 93 gold, 65 silver, and 81 bronze medals at the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Asaba.

According to a report by The Punch, some of the athletes claimed they had been warned not to speak publicly or grant interviews about the unpaid bonuses, a move that has fueled further frustration and resentment within the state’s sporting community.

The athletes, who brought pride to the state with their medal haul, are reportedly demanding that the government fulfil its pledges before extending further financial gestures to visiting teams.

As of press time, there has been no official response from the Ogun State Sports Council or the governor’s office regarding the pending payments.
