‘We fell short’: NFF issues touching apology as Nigeria misses back-to-back World Cup

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued a heartfelt public apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and the millions of Nigerians at home and abroad following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The apology comes after Nigeria’s defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Africa Playoff final on Sunday in Rabat, which sealed the Super Eagles’ exit from the qualification race.

The NFF described the loss as a deeply painful moment for Nigerian football. For a country where the Super Eagles symbolize unity, pride, and national hope, missing the World Cup for the second consecutive cycle carries a heavy emotional toll.

“We fully understand the expectations placed on us by Nigerians,” the NFF said in its statement. “The collective efforts of the players, technical crew, and administrators fell short of the desired result.”

The emotional impact of the loss was felt deeply within the Super Eagles’ camp, with the dressing room after the match described as being filled with visible sadness. Many players were left without words as they processed the setback.

The NFF also acknowledged the unwavering support of the Nigerian public throughout the qualification journey, as well as the extensive backing received from the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the National Assembly, and various ministries.

Additionally, they thanked diplomatic missions, the media, and passionate football supporters for their loyalty during both the highs and lows of the campaign.

Looking ahead, the NFF’s immediate focus will now shift to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco in 2025. The tournament represents a chance for recovery, renewed determination, and an opportunity to restore Nigeria’s footballing pride.

“We will begin a thorough review of the events and decisions that contributed to this setback. This process will be honest, uncompromising, and strategic,” the NFF said.

The review will address both technical and administrative shortcomings while strengthening the structure of the national teams.

In concluding its statement, the NFF pledged to Nigerians that they will rebuild trust, restore national pride, and ensure the Super Eagles rise again.

The federation reaffirmed its commitment to reclaiming Nigeria’s place on the global football stage and vowed that, just as the nation has done before, the Super Eagles will rise stronger and more determined than ever.
