By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s contingents for the CAF African Schools Football Championship Zonal Qualifiers have officially departed the country, signalling another major step in the nation’s expanding investment in school sports development. The boys’ team will compete in the WAFU B region as they seek qualification for the continental finals.

The delegation flew out on Tuesday morning, with the majority of players and officials departing from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while others left through the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos. All members of the contingent are expected to converge in Abidjan before connecting to the host city, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Nigeria has been drawn in Group B alongside Côte d’Ivoire and the Republic of Benin—a competitive but navigable route to the semifinals for a disciplined and cohesive Nigerian squad.

The players were selected from schools that excelled at the National School Football Competition, underscoring the strength of Nigeria’s grassroots football system. Government Basic Education School Cantonment Kaduna, National Grammar School Nike Enugu, Adaigbo Secondary School Ogwashi-Uku, and Ekiti Parapo College are among the institutions represented.

These schools have built reputations for combining academic instruction with structured football development, producing several standout talents for the national squad.
