CAF Confederation Cup: Holders RB Berkane oust Kwara United on away goal rule

By Wale Mustapha
Kwara United saw their campaign in the 2022/23 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup come to a crashing end in the first round on Saturday, after they bowed to the defending champions RS Berkane.
The Harmony Boys had earlier defeated the reigning CAF Super Cup winner 3-1 in the first leg match at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos last Sunday, with goals from Ahmed Taofeek, Wasiu Jimoh and Daniel Bernabas.
Even in defeat, the Moroccans left Lagos with a priceless away goal thanks to a 7th minute through Chieck Ouattara and profited from the away goal in return leg as they bounced the Nigerians out after a 2-0 clinical home win.
The Ilorin-based team surrendered its two-goals advantage Stade Municipal de Berkane as they conceded one in each half, to crash out of the competition on away goal rule to RS Berkane.
Ouattara, who scored the Moroccans’ only goal back in Lagos also opened the scoring against Kwara United, tapping home a nodded ball into the area by enterprising defender Issoufou Dayo in the 16th minute.
Dayo was everywhere on the pitch, as Kwara struggled to hold back pressure from the more faster Moroccans, who kept up the tempo minute by minute. RS Berkane scored what ended up been their saving grace in the 55th minute, with Charki El Bahri Oubaddi getting on the score sheet.
Chakri capitalized on the inability of goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka to clear his line, from a well taken corner kick. Kwara would have conceeded more goals, but for the brilliance of the former Akwa United shot stopper.
Kwara United defeated AS Douanes 3-0 on aggregate in the Preliminary Rounds, scoring the three goals in Lagos, and playing goalless draw in Niamey, Niger Republic, to come.face to face with RS Berkane.
