2023 Afcon qualifiers: Sierra Leone commence training for For Nigeria showdown

By Monsurah Olatunji

Ahead of their 2023 AFCON Qualifiers against Nigeria in June, Sierra Leone’s national senior men’s team has invited 36 home-based players to commence training at the Murray Town playing field.
A win for Sierra Leone will put them in a better position to qualify for their fourth AFCON Tournament but face an uphill task against the three-time African champions.
The encounter which is slated for June 12 will take place in Monrovia, Liberia, with the 22,000 capacity seater sports complex considered one of the finest in the country, having met international standards.
The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) had proposed hosting the match at the newly constructed Southern Arena Stadium in Bo City but the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected this proposal, citing a lack of sufficient standard hotels in the country’s second-largest city.
Meanwhile, SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima met with the players after the training, where he appealed to them to take their training seriously and put up their best performance in order to earn a spot in the national team.
“If you give your best during the training, there is no need for us to invite plenty of foreign-based players,” Brima told the players.
“Please train as a team and take instructions from your head coach. l want an assurance from you, that you are going to defeat Nigeria.”
