NPFL Super 6 MD5 Previews: Enyimba battle title with Rivers, Remo, Insurance tango for continental berth
By Wale Mustapha
It is coming down to final day in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL Super Six playoffs on Sunday with much still to play for.
Following a thrilling Matchday Four outings on Friday where three victories were recorded to put a more clearer pictures on how the playoffs will be decided, the final day promises to give more.
Enyimba and Rivers United are occupying the first and second positions with same points with People’s Elephants leading the pack on goal difference.
Interestingly, the two leading clubs will faceoff in the last game on Sunday where Enyimba will only need to avoid defeat to win their record ninth league title, provided Remo Stars do not beat Insurance with wider goal margin.
For Rivers United, they require an outright win to see them retaining the title.
In a match billed open the final day fixtures by 2pm, Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars will be playing for pride after their dismal performances at the championships.
Both teams are sitting at the bottom of the Super Six logs and would want to bow out on a high.
The encounter between Remo Stars and Insurance FC slated for 4:30pm have more telling implications, not only on both teams but on the final match between Enyimba and Rivers.
A win for Remo Stars will out them on nine points which might see them winning the league, if they do it with three goal margin, or can as well secure second champions league spot if a victory is recorded in Enyimba/Rivers’ match.
Insurance also stand an equal chance to pick a continental spot if they defeat Remo with two goals without conceding. It will see them finish with six points, same with Remo Stars but with superior goal advantage over the Sky Blue Stars.
The NPFL Super Six will determine the eventual winners of the 2022/23 NPFL abridged season and will also produce two teams that will fly Nigeria’s flag at next year’s CAF Champions League, while the third-placed team will be playing in the CAF Confederation Cup.
