Nigeria begin Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome

Nine-time African champions Nigeria will face a less fancied side Sao Tome and Principe in the first round of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers in September.
The Super Falcons were drawn to face Sao Tome in the qualifiers which took place in Rabat, on Thursday, with the first leg is slated to hold in Nigeria while the return leg will take place in Sao Tome.
The winner of the game will face either Cape Verde or Liberia in the second round to make it to WAFCON 2024.
The most successful women’s football team in Africa has qualified for every edition of the WAFCON as well as the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Next WAFCON like the last edition in 2022 will be hosted by Morocco.
South Africa edged Morocco 2-1 to win the last WAFCON title and will face either Eswatini or Burkina Faso in the second round.
Hosts, Morocco already qualified for the tournament while third placed Zambia will face either Angola or Sudan in the second round.
