FIFA Ranking: Super Eagles maintain 39th position for June

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Nigeria’s senior men’s national team remained the 39th best team in the world for the month of June after the latest FIFA Ranking which was released on Thursday.
The Super Eagles also remained the sixth-best team in Africa, the same slot occupied when the previous ranking were released on June 29, 2023.
The team’s inactivity during the past window can be seen as the reason for the stagnancy in the ranking which can also be seen in the placement of other African teams.
The three-time African champions are behind Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt which occupy the top five places in descending order.
Cameroon, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso complete the top ten teams in Africa.
Jose Peseiro’s team is expected to pick more points at the end of next year’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe as well as when the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers gets underway.
The 1980 African champions will face South Africa, Benin Republic, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Lesotho in Group C when the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers get underway.
According to the rankings, none of Nigeria’s opponents in the World Cup qualifiers is in the top 50 bracket in the global football ranking.
Bafana Bafana is ranked 63rd in the world, Benin Republic (93), Zimbabwe (125), Rwanda (139), and Lesotho (151).
