Asisat Oshoala sets enviable Women’s World Cup records for Nigeria
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Nigeria forward, Asisat Oshoala set numerous records as she scored the Super Falcons’ third goal during a 3-2 win over co-host Australia in the second Group B encounter at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday.
The goal made the Barcelona star Nigeria’s joint top goalscorer at the Women’s World Cup.
With three goals alongside Nkiru Okosieme and Rita Nwadike, Oshoala is the third Nigerian player to score three goals at the tournament.
She also emerged as the only African player to have scored at three different Women’s World Cups.
She scored her first goal in 2015 as the nine-time African Champions played out a 3-3 draw with Sweden as she converted the team’s second goal.
Her second goal at the Women’s World Cup came in 2019 as she scored Thomas Dennerby’s second goal during a 2-0 win against South Korea in its second group game.
The third goal was Randy Waldrum’s side’s third goal against Australia which propelled the team to a 3-2 win.
The West African football giants have not lost any game in which Oshoala has scored at the Women’s World Cup.
She is expected to surpass her records as Nigeria prepares to face debutant, the Republic of Ireland on Monday in a bid to seal a place in the Round of 16.
