Mikel Obi Returns to Action in Tianjin Teda’s Defeat

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has provided a significant boost to Gernot Rohr’s World Cup qualifying campaign by making his return to the football pitch in Tianjin Teda’s recent Chinese Super League match. Despite the 2-0 loss at home to Hebei CFFC, Mikel’s presence on the field after a four-month injury layoff underscores his readiness to contribute to Nigeria’s campaign against Cameroon.

Two goals from Ezequiel Lavezzi secured the win for Hebei CFFC, condemning Tianjin Teda to their 12th defeat of the season. This poor run of form has seen them go without a victory in their last nine CSL matches, culminating in their descent into the relegation zone.

As the season enters its final phase with just nine games left to play, Tianjin Teda finds themselves second from the bottom of the league table with a total of 15 points, holding only a one-point lead over the last-placed Yanbian Funde.

Mikel’s return to the pitch is a welcome sight for both Tianjin Teda and the Nigerian national team. His last appearance for the Chinese club was back in April when they secured a 2-0 victory over Chongqing Lifan in the Chinese Super League. In total, Mikel has made four appearances for Tianjin Teda and found the net once.

As Nigeria gears up for their World Cup qualifier against Cameroon, Mikel’s resurgence will undoubtedly bolster their midfield and provide valuable experience and leadership. Football enthusiasts will be eagerly awaiting his contributions in the upcoming crucial fixtures.
