CAF Awards 2023: Super Falcons get Team of the Year nomination

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team’s impressive performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand has earned them a nomination for the 2023 CAF Awards.

The West African giants have been nominated for the 2023 women’s team of the year alongside nine other senior women’s national teams.

The nine-time African champions reached consecutive Round of 16 placement at the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time after equaling the feat achieved in 2019.

Added to the Round of 16 feat were other historic feats like three clean sheets in four games.

The team also became the first African team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup to play three group games without a loss and kept two clean sheets in the process.

The most successful women’s national team in Africa is also in pole position to qualify for the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and Paris 2024 Olympics after a 5-1 aggregate win over Ethiopia in the previous round of the qualifiers.

Challenging Nigeria for the award are Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ghana, Malawi, and Morocco.

Others include African champions, South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia.
