Sylvester Igbonu Acknowledges Formidable Challenge in Breaking Into Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles

In an exclusive interview with Completesportsnigeria.com, FC Ufa forward Sylvester Igbonu has candidly admitted that securing a spot in the Super Eagles squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia poses a formidable challenge.
Igbonu, who last donned the national colors in 2015 under the coaching of Sunday Oliseh, expressed his respect for the current crop of Super Eagles players, emphasizing their exceptional talent and dedication under the tutelage of coach Gernot Rohr.
Speaking in Lagos on Friday, Igbonu acknowledged the team’s stellar performance, particularly in their recent clash against Argentina. He commended their surprising approach in deploying a different formation, leading to an unexpected outcome.
“Their performance in the last game (Vs Argentina) took everyone by surprise because of the way they were set out in a different formation,” Igbonu remarked. “There are good players in the team playing well, and fact is that they are getting results which makes it difficult for any player getting into the squad.”
While expressing his desire for another chance to represent Nigeria, Igbonu remained pragmatic about the competition within the team. He stated, “I’m doing well in Russia, and it will be a dream come true if I get another chance, and if not, I will continue to enjoy my football at FC Ufa.”
With an impressive record of seven goals in 14 games for FC UFA this season, Igbonu’s determination to contribute to the national team remains palpable, highlighting the intense competition for coveted spots in Rohr’s Super Eagles.
