Echegini’s strike breaks Waldrum’s heart thrice in NCAA College Tourney

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

For the third consecutive meeting this season, Jennifer Onyi Echegini and her Florida State University (FSU) handed former Nigeria coach, Randy Waldrum another  embarrassing defeat.

This time it was in the NCAA College Women’s Soccer Tournament quarter-final as Echegini’s FSU secured a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh University with the three goals coming in the second half.

Talyor Huff finally broke the deadlock to open the scoring from the spot for the visitors in the 62nd minute before Leah Pais doubled the lead from another spot kick for FSU six minutes later.

In the 69th minute, it was the turn of Echegini to score the third and seal a 3-0 win.

This will be the third time that Echegini’s FSU will beat Waldrum’s Pitts Panthers.

During the ACC Regular season, FSU recorded a 3-2 win. In the season-ending ACC Championship, FSU also beat the Pitts on their way to winning the title.

Echegini will focus on the reminder of the  NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament after international duties with Nigeria in the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final qualifying round clash against Cape Verde this month.
