Abbey George criticizes Eric Chelle for misusing players in draw against Zimbabwe

Former Nigeria international Abbey Peterson George has criticized Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle following their disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The result has left Nigeria’s qualification hopes hanging by a thread, with the Super Eagles currently sitting 4th in Group C, six points behind leaders South Africa. With just seven points from a possible 18, Nigeria faces an uphill battle to secure a place in the tournament.

George, who earned 18 caps for the national team, believes the blame for the draw lies primarily with Chelle, who he claims played several players out of position. Despite acknowledging that the late equalizer was a collective failure, George argued that the coaching decisions were a key factor.

“It was sad to see, but the coach and the players have to take responsibility,” George told Brila FM. “I believe Chelle made a mistake with the selection. He tried to accommodate all his best players rather than picking the best team.”

The former defender pointed to specific tactical errors, criticizing Chelle for playing players in unfamiliar positions.

“There’s no reason to play Ola Aina, who’s been excellent at right-back, at left-back when Onyemaechi is on the bench. The same goes for Lookman and Iwobi, who were played out of position,” he added.

George also questioned the decision-making on the field, especially in the final stages of the match.

“As players on the field, with just five minutes remaining, there’s no need to be pushing forward. They should have held onto the 1-0 lead and secured the three points.”

The former Super Eagles defender stressed the need for experienced players to take charge in crucial moments.

“Players need to step up. Experienced players from big European teams should know how to manage a crucial game. They need to show some humility,” George concluded.
