Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman showcased his talent in full force as Atalanta secured a hard-fought 2-1 win against Monza on Sunday.
Returning to Atalanta’s starting lineup for the first time in four games, Lookman played a pivotal role by providing two crucial assists, keeping Atalanta’s hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League alive.
Despite a tough start to the game, Atalanta managed to take the lead just before halftime. Lookman delivered a pinpoint corner kick, which was met by Charles De Ketelaere who rose highest to head the ball into the net.
In the 72nd minute, Lookman provided his second assist of the game, laying the ball for El Bilal Toure who made no mistake in doubling Atalanta’s lead to 2-0.
Although Monza launched a late comeback attempt, they could only manage to pull one goal back in the 89th minute. Daniel Maldini produced a brilliant individual effort, weaving past defenders before unleashing a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Lookman’s performance highlighted his importance to the team, having contributed six assists and eight goals in 28 games in the Italian top division this season.
Furthermore, Lookman joined an elite group of players, becoming the fifth player to score more than 20 goals and provide more than 10 assists since the start of last season in Serie A. He joins the likes of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Rafael Leão, Paulo Dybala, and Olivier Giroud in this impressive feat.
