Nigeria international and Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman, has reacted after failing to meet up with Victor Osimhen’s in the Italian Serie A goal challenge.
The 25-year-old had previously openly challenged his compatriot Victor Osimhen as he promised to outscore him in the Serie A.
However, things did not go as planned for the former RB Leipzig attacker who went on a six-match goal drought after making the statement.
Lookman had a terrific goal-scoring run in the first half of the Italian Serie A as he netted 12 goals in 23 appearances with four assists but the Nigerian struggled for goals since returning to club action in the second stanza.
Although, he slipped behind his challenge despite being a strong contender to match the goalscoring consistency of Osimhen who eventually scored 26 goals to help Napoli win its first Scudetto in 33 years and become the first African player to win the league’s Golden Boot award.
Despite suffering an injury that kept him out of Gian Piero Gasperini’s starting lineup, the Nigerian finished the season breaking a 70-year goal record with his 13 league targets in a debut season.
He became the first player since Poul Rasmussen in the 1952/53 season to score double-digit goals in a debut Serie A season.
In a chit-chat with Soccernet during the Super Eagles dinner outing ahead of their AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone, Lookman acknowledged the ups and downs while reflecting on his season but remained determined to bounce back stronger.
“It is just one of those things. Next season and the upper season, I’d come back stronger from the downs. This season has not been a good season for me, but I just need to keep improving.”
