Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman has formally submitted a transfer request, citing a desire to pursue a new challenge after three seasons with the club.
Lookman who played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s historic UEFA Europa League triumph in 2024, released a personal statement reflecting on his time in Bergamo and the circumstances leading to his decision.
“Over the past three years at Atalanta, I’ve given everything — not just as a footballer, but as a person. I’ve worn the shirt with pride and done my best to represent this club and the city of Bergamo with heart, passion, and dedication,” Lookman said.
“Winning the Europa League and celebrating that incredible night in Dublin remains one of the proudest moments of my career. Even now, it gives me goosebumps.”
Lookman, 27, acknowledged his deep bond with the Atalanta supporters and expressed gratitude for their unwavering support.
“Atalanta — and especially its fans — have become a part of me. This place has felt like home since day one. That’s what makes this message so difficult.”
However, the former RB Leipzig and Everton player revealed that despite an agreement with club leadership that he would be allowed to leave if a fair offer arrived, the club is currently blocking a transfer opportunity.
“After open conversations, there was a mutual understanding that if a fair offer came in, I would be allowed to move. That offer has now come, yet I find myself in a position where the opportunity is being denied — for reasons I do not understand,” he said.
“After months of uncertainty, broken promises, and what I feel has been unfair treatment towards me — both professionally and personally — I feel I have no choice but to speak out. Enough is enough.”
The player concluded by thanking Atalanta fans and reiterating that his love for the city and the club remains intact.
“To the fans: Thank you. Your support has meant the world to me. Whatever comes next, Bergamo will always be a part of me.”
Lookman made 98 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta, scoring 30 goals and assisting 17. He is currently under contract until June 2026.
