AFCON 2023: ‘Nigeria deserve more from coaching tactics’ – Juwon Oshaniwa

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Former Nigeria leftback, Juwon Oshaniwa has called on the Nigeria Football Federation leadership to ensure that whoever will take charge of the Super Eagles should be able to show tactical flexibility in managing the team.

The three-time African champions were unable to claim their fourth title after a 2-1 loss to hosts, Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the Africa Cup of Nation 2023 in Abidjan which Oshaniwa sees as a good performance by the players.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner feels that the Super Eagles showed that there could be more but the coach was unable to get the best out of the side.

said those calling for the appointment of a new coach are doing so in the interest of Nigerian football.

“We deserve a better coach with better ideology, instinct and formation,” Oshaniwa told Brila FM.

“Honestly speaking, I think we deserve more. For the boys, they have done their best. Kudos to them.

“We should celebrate what we got at least. We didn’t get the gold medal but we didn’t leave empty handed.

“There is always room for improvement. I think there are better days for the crop of players we have got. Honestly speaking, you could see a brighter future for them when well managed with good gaffer.” He concluded.

Osaniwa was part of Stephen Keshi led side that won Nigeria’s third AFCON title in 2013.

Since then, the Super Eagles are in search of their fourth title and will have to try again next year in Morocco.
