AFCON 2023 Player of the Tournament, William Troost-Ekong, resumes training in Europe

William Troost-Ekong, the standout player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has returned to training in Europe after spending his season-end break in Nigeria.

The 30-year-old Nigerian captain, who led the Super Eagles to the final of the tournament, had been in Nigeria for several weeks, launching his foundation, participating in a charity match, and witnessing the national team’s crucial home draw against South Africa in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Troost-Ekong shared his return to training with his teammates in Thessaloniki on social media, expressing his readiness to resume club duties.

“BACK TO BUSINESS,” the former Watford star proudly announced on his Facebook page, highlighting his eagerness to get back into action following his impressive performances for the Super Eagles.

Despite sustaining an injury during the AFCON, Troost-Ekong played through the pain to secure the player of the tournament award.

He later underwent surgery, which caused him to miss the remainder of the Greek Superliga season with PAOK.

Now back in training, he aims to regain his form and contribute to his club’s success in the upcoming season.
