Nigeria are one win away from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final as they prepare to face South Africa in the semifinal of the competition on Wednesday (7 February) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Super Eagles have seen off fierce competition in the shape of Angola and Cameroon, whilst Bafana Bafana defeated Morocco and Cape Verde to reach the semi-finals.
Because of their goalkeeper’s outstanding play, saving four penalties in the shootout, Bafana Bafana advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2000.
The two sides have come face to face 14 times, with the first fixture coming in 1992.
They last met at the 2019 edition of AFCON held in Egypt, where the Super Eagles emerged victorious as a first-half goal from Samuel Chukwueze set Nigeria up nicely before Bongani Zungu equalized with 20 minutes to play.
However, William Troost-Ekong netted a last-minute winner.
Meanwhile, South Africa has never defeated Nigeria in the AFCON—losing 2-0 in the 2000 semifinals, 4-0 in the 2004 final, and being eliminated after a 2-1 loss in the 2019 last eight.
The quarter-final meeting was their AFCON fixture for four years, following their failure to qualify for the 2021 edition of the competition.
With reigning champions Senegal and record holders Egypt both out of the competition, Nigeria boss José Peseiro will be eyeing up victory for his side.
The three-time champions who are with the most podium finishes on the continent will look to eliminate South Africa on Wednesday to play either Ivory Coast or Congo DR in the final on February 11.
Out of seven final appearances, Nigeria has been crowned AFCON champions on three occasions. The Super Eagles have also finished third on eight occasions, most recently in 2019.
The game between South Africa and Nigeria is slated to begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at Bouake’s Stade de la Paix.
Across Africa and beyond, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will broadcast the 2023 AFCON on YouTube as they aim to make the tournament accessible on free-to-air TV across the continent.
Nigerian fans will be able to watch the match live on AfroSport, whilst those in South Africa can watch via Supersports on DSTV and Starstimes Sports Premium.
