AFCON 2023: Vincent Enyeama clears air on rumoured NFF appointment

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, has cleared the air regarding his potential appointment as part of the backroom staff for the Nigerian national team ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
Earlier, the former Super Eagles star took to his official Instagram to post a comment saying; “Let’s go, See you in camp. Time for business.”
The comment from the former Lille goalkeeper appears to suggest there’s been some sort of appointment as a goalkeeper trainer in Jose Peseiro’s crew.
However, the 41-year-old who featured in over a century of games for the Nigerian National team, has clarified that there has been no official appointment by NFF and no discussions in that regard.
Remains one the best the nation has seen, Enyeama left the team in 2015, announcing his retirement at 33-year-old.
He, however, explained that his comment was a personal expression of support, intending to visit the team during the AFCON and provide encouragement to the players.
Nigeria is scheduled to start its campaign on January 14 against Equatorial Guinea, followed by matches against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau, and scrutiny surrounding the goalkeeping department of the team continues as many wish to see the legendary goalkeeper help Nigeria.
“I haven’t been given any appointment by the NFF, neither was there any such discussion,” Enyeama said as quoted by popular journalist Mighty George via his X handle.
“That was only a personal comment, meaning I will visit them in camp when I attend the AFCON. Any opportunity to encourage the lads, I use it.”
