AFCON 2025: Joseph Yobo optimistic about Super Eagles’ glory

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigerian international Joseph Yobo has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following the tournament’s draw, which placed Nigeria in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s recent AFCON campaign in Cote d’Ivoire, Yobo noted that the Super Eagles were unfortunate not to have won the competition.

Nigeria finished as runners-up in the 2023 edition, losing 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final after an impressive run.

Tunisia had eliminated Nigeria in the 2019 tournament in Cameroon, despite the Super Eagles finishing the group stage with a perfect record.

Speaking to journalist Babatunde Ojora in a video posted on X, Yobo expressed optimism that the Super Eagles’ near-miss in 2023 would fuel their ambition for the upcoming 2025 tournament.

“We have a good crop of a new generation of young players that have been together for a while, so I don’t think that understanding is a problem for them,” Yobo said.

“We have shown that at the last AFCON, we were very unlucky not to win. So, if we can build on that momentum, and build on it further, then I think we can get to the final and hopefully win it this time.”

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco, starting on December 21, 2025, and running through to January 18, 2026.

Yobo’s optimism offers hope that the Super Eagles, with their promising new generation, can go one step further and claim their fourth continental title.
