AFCON 2025: Kunle Soname Backs Super Eagles to Go All the Way, Flags Defensive Concern Ahead of Mozambique Clash

Businessman and football administrator Kunle Soname has expressed confidence in the Nigeria’s senior men’s national team’s chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), while also highlighting defensive lapses as a key area of concern ahead of Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Mozambique.

Soname, who watched Mozambique’s group-stage match against Cameroon, warned that the Mambas possess dangerous individual quality and should not be underestimated.

“I watched Mozambique’s match against Cameroon. They have extremely good individual talents who work hard,” Soname told SuperSports.

Despite that, he believes Nigeria have match-winners capable of deciding the contest.

“Victor Osimhen, for me, can single-handedly decide the match, which is important. Ademola Lookman is another fantastic footballer, and he has impressed me a lot at this AFCON.”

Soname backed the overall strength of the Super Eagles squad, tipping them as genuine contenders for the title.

“We have a team that can bring the title home. They can bring that trophy home and I am rooting for them, although I have seen some other good teams.”

However, the owner of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Remo Stars pointed out Nigeria’s tendency to concede goals as a worrying pattern.

“Unfortunately, we have the habit of conceding goals. That is the problem.

“Against Mozambique, I would have said the match would end 3–0, but because we always concede and lose concentration towards the end of the game, maybe it will end 3–1.”

Nigeria face Mozambique in the Round of 16 with a place in the quarter-finals at stake, as the Super Eagles continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
