AFCON 2025: “We will have fun” — Eric Chelle all smiles with Super Eagles’ group

By Monsurah Olatunji

Eric Chelle, the newly appointed coach of Nigeria’s senior national football team, has shared his thoughts on the Super Eagles’ draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), expressing optimism and excitement about the upcoming tournament.

The Super Eagles, who finished as runners-up in the 2023 AFCON, losing 2-1 to host nation Côte d’Ivoire in the final, are aiming to go one step further under Chelle’s leadership.

The West African giants will face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C, with the competition set to take place in Morocco at the end of the year.

While Nigeria has the most AFCON titles in their group, with three championships, Chelle is mindful of the strong competition they will face.

Tunisia, with one title to their name, and Uganda and Tanzania, both still in search of their first continental glory, will all be eager to make their mark.

“Yes, I think it’s difficult with 24 teams,” Chelle said in a video posted by OJB Sports on Instagram.

“Great team all of them and great coaches as well. Nigeria also has a great coach. So, all I know for now for sure is that we will have a great team and we will have fun.”

Chelle, who guided Mali to a quarterfinal finish in the last AFCON, is now focused on helping Nigeria navigate through their group and aim for the title. His relaxed and positive outlook is a promising sign for the team, with the coach’s emphasis on fun and teamwork.

The 2025 AFCON will officially kick off on December 21, 2025, with all 24 participating teams eager to progress toward the final, which will be held on January 18, 2026.
