AFCON 2025Q: Eguavoen focused on positive history as Nigeria gear up for Benin rematch

Interim coach and current NFF Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, is focused on building on the Super Eagles’ positive history at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny ahead of their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic on Thursday.
The match, which will take place at the iconic stadium in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, is a must-win or draw for Nigeria to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
Eguavoen, who previously led Nigeria to the 2017 AFCON semifinals, knows the importance of keeping a positive mindset when playing at a familiar venue.
The Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny is a ground the Super Eagles have had success on, most recently in the 2023 AFCON, where they triumphed over Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, and Angola to top Group D under the management of José Peseiro.
Despite a disappointing 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in a World Cup qualifier at the same venue earlier this year, Eguavoen is choosing to focus on Nigeria’s past victories at the stadium and the team’s strong track record.
“The stadium is a familiar one for us, and we have good memories from the AFCON,” Eguavoen stated in a report released by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
“We will focus on the positive results we’ve achieved here and ensure we perform well again on Thursday.”
Nigeria’s encounter with Benin Republic is crucial, as a draw or victory will secure their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. With the Super Eagles seeking to bounce back after the World Cup qualifier loss, Eguavoen and his squad are determined to put in a performance worthy of their standing.
As both teams gear up for the match, Benin Republic will also be looking to keep their qualification hopes alive, adding extra intensity to an already high-stakes fixture. With Eguavoen at the helm, the Super Eagles are focused on securing a vital result and advancing to the continental tournament.
