Akinkunmi Amoo faces legal proceedings amid alleged sexual assault case

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria U17 breakthrough star Akinkunmi Amoo is preparing to return to court amid ongoing legal proceedings related to an alleged sexual assault case in Denmark.

The 21-year-old footballer was accused of sexual assault and faced two other counts, leading to his detention in September 2022. Subsequently, he was sentenced to a year in prison and faced deportation from Denmark.

Despite his legal troubles, Amoo signed for Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia last year, following an offer extended by the club’s former Sports Director Jesper Jansson. Jansson cited a personal responsibility to assist Amoo in navigating the challenging situation he found himself in.

Amoo joined the Queens of Cyprus at the beginning of the 2023/24 season, making six appearances for the club before having his contract terminated in early March 2024.

With both Jansson and Amoo no longer associated with Omonia Nicosia, the appeal on the conviction of the former Golden Eaglets star is set to be heard in Denmark in June.

The legal proceedings surrounding Amoo’s case highlight the complexities and challenges faced by athletes navigating legal issues while pursuing their careers.
