Akor Adams draws inspiration from Nigeria legend John Utaka

By Saheed Afolabi

Montpellier forward, Akor Adams, has credited Nigeria football legend John Utaka as a key influence in his decision to join the French Ligue 1 club.

The 24-year-old striker, who has scored three goals and provided one assist in 11 games before sustaining an injury last month, revealed that Utaka’s legacy played a significant role in his move to Montpellier.

“Like I’ve said to almost every Nigerian kid, John Utaka is a legend. His influence was part of my decision to come to Montpellier,” Adams told Tribal Football.

“He had played for the club, won the championship with them, and is adored by the fans.”

Adams highlighted how Utaka’s accomplishments at Montpellier have paved the way for young players, offering them the opportunity to thrive at the club.

“For me, following in those footsteps, knowing that he laid the path for a young player, I was glad to take the offer to sign for Montpellier,” he said.

The Nigerian forward also praised Utaka for his guidance as a mentor. Adams noted that the former international striker provides invaluable advice on his game, particularly in terms of clinical finishing.

“He played as a striker, just like me, and after games, we have discussions on what I should have done or the best options. We have these striker-to-striker interactions, which help me improve,” he continued.

“It’s a huge privilege to have him among the coaching staff at Montpellier,” Adams added.

Currently, Montpellier is struggling at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, with just eight points from 13 matches. However, with the support of influential figures like Utaka, Adams is optimistic about his development and the club’s future.
