Akwa United coach Ayeni promises to work on mistakes after Bendel Insurance loss

Head coach of Akwa United, Ayodeji Ayeni has promised to resolve his players’ mistakes following a 2-0 defeat against Bendel Insurance in their Nigeria Professional Football League opener in Uyo on Sunday.
Newly promoted side shocked Akwa United in Uyo condemned the 2021 champions to an opening day defeat in front of their own fans no through goals from Imade Osehenkhoe and Ismael Seriki at the Goodswill Akpabio Stadium.
“It is quite unfortunate that the two goals were a mistake and being the first game a lot of expectations on the team,” Ayeni told media.
In 2019, the Promise Keepers suffered similar season opener when they lost to El Kanemi Warriors the last time the NPFL was played in an abridged format.
However, the former Sunshine Star coach is confidence about his side bouncing back from their opening loss in subsequent matches.
”Football is very dynamic, what you bargained for might not be what you will see but I think in the first half we suffered laxity and were naive in front of goals,” he continued.
“The game of football is, either way, today Insurance has got it right and believes the league is a marathon anything can happen.
“We did a bit better in the second half but the god of soccer is not on our side. We will go back and work on our mistakes.”
