Alex Iwobi Acknowledges the Need for Consistency to Cement Arsenal Spot

Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi, has openly acknowledged the necessity of delivering a consistent performance to secure his place within Arsenal’s first-team roster. The 21-year-old player’s journey through the ranks at the North London club has been marked by both ups and downs, prompting him to emphasize the importance of unwavering dedication and resilience.

Iwobi made his initial breakthrough into Arsenal’s first team during the latter part of the 2015/2016 season, a period where he made an indelible mark by scoring two goals in 13 appearances. However, his second full season with the Gunners proved to be more challenging as he grappled with limited playing time amid the team’s struggles for results. In the current season, Iwobi has been afforded just two league appearances, with a muscle strain casting doubt on his availability for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

Reflecting on his experiences, Iwobi conveyed, “It was hard but something I had to learn from. If you are not performing consistently at a club like Arsenal, then there are other players ready to take the opportunity — which I learned the tough way. I wasn’t involved as much as I wanted to be but I just had to be patient, still have the same attitude, work hard in training and wait for my chance again. That’s what I’ve been doing.”

Iwobi, recognized for his attacking prowess, affirmed the significance of creating and scoring goals, stressing that it is central to his role within the team. He acknowledged that others in similar positions have excelled in this aspect and noted, “People in my position were doing better than me in that aspect of the game, which is to eventually win games, and that’s something I had to work on.”

Additionally, he emphasized the unpredictable nature of professional football, stating, “At the end of the day, there could be injuries which come left, right and center. So you might be chucked in to play a Premier League game or on the Thursday in the Europa League. No matter the situation, you have to be ready for it.”

Iwobi’s candid reflections highlight the competitive environment within a club like Arsenal and the dedication required to thrive in such a demanding footballing arena. As he continues to hone his skills and strive for consistency, his journey with the Gunners remains a compelling narrative for football enthusiasts worldwide.
