Algeria to Petition CAF Over Officiating After AFCON 2025 Quarter-Final Loss to Nigeria

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) are set to formally submit reports to the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) following what they describe as poor officiating in their 2–0 defeat to Nigeria at the quarter-final stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
According to claims from the Algerian FA, several key decisions made by Senegalese referee Issa Sy during the encounter were questionable and allegedly favoured the Super Eagles.
The North Africans insist that a clear penalty was denied, while other match incidents were handled inconsistently.
Algeria have also raised concerns over the referee’s conduct at full time, alleging that Issa Sy failed to shake hands with Algerian players after the final whistle.
In addition, the FAF claim their players were provoked by Nigerian players following the match.
Beyond on-field issues, the Algerians further allege that journalists and media professionals from Algeria were attacked in the stadium tunnel area after the game, an incident they say will also be included in their official submission.
As part of their complaint, Algeria are reportedly asking CAF to ban Issa Sy and remove him from the remainder of the tournament with immediate effect.
CAF is now expected to review the reports and any supporting evidence before determining whether further action will be taken. The governing body has not yet issued an official response.
Nigeria, meanwhile, progressed to the semi-finals where they will face tournament hosts Morocco, as their pursuit of a fourth AFCON title continues.
