Alloy Agu clamours for support for Eric Chelle as Super Eagles head coach

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigerian international Alloy Agu has weighed in on the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, urging the necessary support to ensure his success.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently unveiled Eric Chelle, the former Mali national team coach, as the first non-Nigerian African to take charge of the Super Eagles.

The 47-year-old has been handed the responsibility of guiding Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup under a two-year contract.

While Chelle’s appointment has faced some criticism and skepticism from certain quarters, Agu, a 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion, expressed his optimism about the decision.

He emphasized the importance of support from the NFF, players, and coaching staff in helping Chelle succeed.

Speaking to Complete Sports, Agu said, “I am delighted that the NFF has appointed a new coach, Eric Chelle, to manage the Super Eagles.

“Many may doubt Chelle, but the NFF must have their reasons for his appointment, and I believe he will succeed with the senior national team if given the free hand to operate.”

Agu went on to express confidence in Nigeria’s chances for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers: “Impossible is nothing when it comes to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With the right attitude from the players and coaches, I feel very optimistic that Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup.”

He concluded by stressing the importance of supporting Chelle: “We just need to show him support and provide information where necessary; that will help the team improve.”
