Amuneke Applauds Rising Star Uzoho, Backs World Cup Inclusion

Former Super Eagles forward, Emmanuel Amuneke, has voiced his endorsement of teenage Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, asserting that the young talent possesses the qualities necessary to contend for a spot in Nigeria’s World Cup squad. Uzoho’s noteworthy debut for Deportivo, where he secured a clean sheet in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Eibar, has captured the attention of football enthusiasts.

Amuneke, a key figure in the national U-17 technical crew that identified Uzoho’s potential in 2012, believes the 18-year-old has the potential to become a top goalkeeper for both his club and country, given consistent opportunities. Reflecting on Uzoho’s early career, Amuneke expressed regret that the young goalkeeper missed out on being the Golden Eaglets’ No.1 during the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

“He (Uzoho) was brilliant against Eibar, and I think he will develop into a top player since he has got his chance,” remarked Amuneke in an interview with Completesportsnigeria.com. Emphasizing the significance of Uzoho’s chance with the Super Eagles, Amuneke urged the young goalkeeper to demonstrate consistency in subsequent games.

Acknowledging the contribution of Emeka Amadi in nurturing emerging goalkeepers, Amuneke commended the coach for instilling faith in the talents of Uzoho and others like Dele Alampasu and Akpan Udoh. Furthermore, Amuneke credited Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles coach, for promoting young players in the senior national team, suggesting that a call-up for Uzoho would not be unwarranted.

Uzoho, who became the youngest foreign goalkeeper to play in La Liga at 18, expressed his gratitude on Twitter for the overwhelming support following his memorable debut. As Uzoho’s star continues to rise, the anticipation of his potential inclusion in Nigeria’s World Cup squad grows among fans and football pundits alike.
