Arsenal Forward Alex Iwobi Sidelined in Blow to Nigeria’s World Cup Qualification Bid

London, 8th November 2023 – Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi has been dealt a significant setback in his international career as he withdraws from the Super Eagles squad ahead of the crucial 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon. The 21-year-old footballer, who has made a promising start to the current season with two appearances for the Gunners, suffered a thigh muscle injury during a training session. The unfortunate injury is expected to sideline him for a minimum of two weeks.

Iwobi, a consistent presence in the Super Eagles’ lineup since his debut in an international friendly against DR Congo under former coach Sunday Oliseh on October 8, 2015, has amassed 11 international caps. His notable contribution includes a goal scored in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Zambia during a World Cup qualifier in Ndola on matchday 1.

In light of Iwobi’s untimely absence, Coach Gernot Rohr has moved swiftly to bolster the squad, summoning the services of CSKA Moscow striker Aaron Samuel. Samuel’s inclusion aims to compensate for the loss of Iwobi’s attacking prowess. Additionally, Uche Agbo, a dependable defender from Standard Liege, has been invited to further strengthen the team’s defensive options.

The announcement of Iwobi’s injury and subsequent replacement was made via the official Nigeria Super Eagles Twitter account, which stated, “Just in: Aaron Samuel called in to replace injured Alex Iwobi. Uche Agbo also invited.”

As Nigeria gears up for the pivotal clashes against Cameroon, the absence of the talented forward is undoubtedly a blow to their World Cup qualification ambitions. The Super Eagles’ fans will be keenly watching as the team seeks to secure a place in the prestigious tournament without the contributions of Alex Iwobi, at least for the next two weeks.
