Asisat Oshoala breaks personal season record as Barcelona thrash Real Sociedad

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria forward Asisat Oshoala notched her 21st goal and set her personal best goalscoring season record as Barcelona defeated Real Sociedad 5-2 on Saturday.

Before the tie, the Nigeria international had her most goals as 20 in foreign leagues since turning a professional in 2015 after her Liverpool switch.

On the day, the Spanish champions set aside the excitement of a fourth consecutive title celebration and continued their ruthless campaign, beginning with Patricia Guijarro opening the scoring in the 21st minute.

Oshoala doubled the lead for Jonathan Giraldez’s side four minutes later with her 21st league goal of the campaign.

In the 29th minute, Patrica Guijarro made it 3-0 before Caroline Graham Hansen extended the lead to four in the 32nd minute.

Six minutes later, Synne Jensen reduced the deficit for the hosts as they bid to fightback against the European finalists.

However, Hansen restored Barcelona’s four-goal lead while Guijarro’s own goal made the scoreline stand at 5-2 in the 58th minute.

Oshoala saw 70 minutes of action before she was replaced by Bruna Vilamala after scoring her 21st league goal.

Her latest strike takes her to third on the scorers chart, with one and three behind Madrid CFF and Zambia’s Racheal Kundananji and Levante’s Alba Redondo respectively.

With three games to go, Champions Barcelona tops the log with 81 points after 27 games, ten points ahead of Real Madrid ahead of its next game against Toni Payne’s Sevilla on Wednesday, May 10.
