Barcelona complete £64m Rodri deal from Manchester City
Barcelona have officially completed the signing of Spain midfielder Rodri from Manchester City in one of the biggest transfers of the summer window, with the 30-year-old agreeing a contract that runs until 30 June 2030.
The Catalan club confirmed the agreement with Manchester City in a statement on Tuesday, saying: “The club announces that it has reached an agreement with Manchester City for the signing of Spanish midfielder Rodri, on a contract until 30 June 2030.”
The final deal was concluded several days after the two clubs reached an agreement in principle. Manchester City accepted a package worth about 76.5m euros, made up of approximately 60m euros in guaranteed payments and additional performance-related clauses that can be achieved.
Rodri travelled to Barcelona on Monday to complete the formal stages of the transfer. Those procedures included his medical examination and the signing of his contract before the move was officially announced.
On his arrival, the Spain international made clear how pleased he was to join the club.
“Playing for Barcelona is a dream come true. I am extremely happy and excited to work with my team-mates,” Rodri said.
Barcelona also marked the midfielder’s arrival on social media with the message: “The master of space and time touches down in Barcelona.”
Proven winner
Rodri arrives at Barcelona with a reputation as one of the leading midfielders in world football. He won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 and was named the best player at the 2026 World Cup after helping Spain win the tournament for a second time in their history.
During seven seasons with Manchester City, Rodri won 12 major honours. His successes included the Champions League and four Premier League titles.
His arrival is expected to strengthen a Barcelona midfield that already includes Pedri, Gavi and Dani Olmo. The club are also facing the expected absence of Frenkie de Jong for several months because of injury, increasing the need for another high-level option in the centre of the pitch.
Barcelona hope Rodri’s experience, control and success at the highest level will help them defend their La Liga title and compete strongly in the Champions League. The club believe the Spain midfielder can provide an important addition as they continue to develop their squad under the current coaching staff.
The deal is another significant step in Barcelona’s activity during this summer’s transfer window. The club have also recruited other players and are continuing to build an ambitious project aimed at maintaining domestic success while improving their prospects in European competition.
For Manchester City, the transfer brings an end to Rodri’s seven-year spell at the club. For Barcelona, it represents the completion of a major deal for one of the most decorated and influential midfielders of his generation.
