Barcelona’s attacking philosophy under Hansi Flick exposed as Real Madrid highlight defensive weakness
Barcelona’s aggressive attacking approach under manager Hansi Flick is increasingly being viewed as a potential threat to their season after Real Madrid exploited the space behind their defence in a 2-1 victory at Camp Nou.
Kylian Mbappe scored during the latest El Clasico as Real Madrid closed the gap on Barcelona to three points.
According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s high press and commitment to attacking football regularly leave significant gaps at the back. Opponents have been able to target those spaces with quick counter-attacks, raising questions over whether Flick’s side can find a better balance between their attacking ambition and defensive security.
The problem has appeared in several important matches rather than being limited to the defeat by Real Madrid.
Paris Saint-Germain also took advantage of Barcelona’s defensive vulnerability in a 4-2 victory. The Catalan club experienced further difficulties against Atletico Madrid, conceding a late goal to Alexander Sorloth in December 2024.
The same fixture in the Copa del Rey in February 2025 produced an eventful 4-4 draw, with both sides again able to exploit openings during the match.
Barcelona’s problems continued in the Champions League during the 2024-2025 season, when they faced Inter Milan. They conceded an equaliser in added time before eventually losing the match in extra time.
A similar situation occurred against Paris Saint-Germain in October 2025, when Goncalo Ramos scored a late goal in the 90th minute. Barcelona also encountered defensive difficulties in their European meeting with Atletico Madrid during the 2025-2026 season.
The repeated results suggest the issue is part of an established pattern. Barcelona’s opponents have repeatedly found opportunities behind the defence, particularly in the closing stages when the team pushes forward either to find a goal or to maintain pressure on the opposition.
The risk is heightened when Barcelona commit large numbers of players to attack, leaving them vulnerable if possession is lost and the opposition breaks quickly.
Rodri Hernandez referred to Barcelona’s attacking strength after their 5-2 win over Real Betis, but also highlighted the number of goals the team had been conceding.
That leaves Flick with the task of preserving Barcelona’s attacking effectiveness while improving defensive cover and reducing the danger posed by counter-attacks.
