Bayelsa Queens set to learn WAFU-B Champions League opponents on Tuesday

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions, Bayelsa Queens, will discover their group-stage opponents for the 2025 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers on Tuesday, July 29, when the official draw takes place.

The draw will also feature clubs from other CAF sub-regions including WAFU-A (West Africa Zone A), COSAFA (Southern Africa), UNAF (North Africa), CECAFA (East Africa), and UNIFFAC (Central Africa), as preparations heighten ahead of the next CAF Women’s Champions League season.

Bayelsa Queens, fondly known as the Prosperity Girls, are set to make a return to the WAFU-B stage, having made history in 2022 as the first Nigerian club to win the regional title since the competition’s inception in 2021.

Their success that year earned them qualification to the CAF Women’s Champions League, where they impressed on the continental stage.

The 2025 edition of the WAFU-B qualifiers will kick off on August 9 in Côte d’Ivoire, the same country where Edo Queens triumphed in 2024, becoming the second Nigerian team to lift the coveted WAFU-B trophy.

Previous winners of the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League include: Hasaacas Ladies (Ghana), Bayelsa Queens (Nigeria), Ampem Darkoa (Ghana), and Edo Queens (Nigeria).

Each of these clubs went on to feature in the CAF Women’s Champions League, making the WAFU-B tournament a vital qualification pathway and a showcase of West Africa’s top women’s football talent.

Bayelsa Queens now aim to reclaim their spot on the continental stage as they gear up for another challenging but promising campaign.
