Brenda Rodgers backs Kelechi Iheanacho to shine after late Celtic winner

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has tipped Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho to get even better after his dramatic late heroics at Rugby Park.
Iheanacho was the match-winner, keeping his composure to score a stoppage-time penalty that secured a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock for the Scottish champions on Sunday.
“I was really pleased for Kels,” Rodgers said after the game. “I think the last penalty he took for me was at Wembley, when we beat Man City in the Community Shield, and he tucked that one away too.
“That was a big moment for him with the supporters and everything else. He’s got big moments in him, and once he gets fitter, he’s only going to get better.”
Rodgers explained that regular spot-kick taker Arne Engels was off the pitch when the penalty was awarded, while Benji Nygren had shown interest in stepping up. However, the manager made it clear who he wanted at the spot.
“My message was for Kels to take it,” Rodgers revealed. “I know the confidence he carries and what a goal like that can do for him. I’m delighted for him and for the team – it’s been a long couple of weeks, and that was a big win for us.”
The victory keeps Celtic’s momentum going as Rodgers’ side continue their push for domestic dominance, with Iheanacho already showing signs of becoming a key figure in their attack.
