CAF appoints Senegalese referees for Rivers United clash with Angolan opponent

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Ahead of Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup clash between Nigeria’s sole representative Rivers United and Angola side, Academica Petroleos Clube do Lobito, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed officials that will be on duty for the game.

The match is the first group stage game of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup season and is billed to be held at the 30,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Sunday, 26th November 2023.

CAF has appointed Senegalese referee Adalbert Diouf as the centre referee of the encounter.

Diouf will be assisted by his compatriots Djibril Canada and Mamadou Ngom while El Hadji Amadou Sy will be the fourth official.

Hosts Rivers United will again play their continental fixtures in Uyo for the second year running after CAF refused permission for the usage of their home ground, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Sunday’s games will be followed by clashes against Club Africain and Dreams FC.

Getting to the quarterfinals last season will go a long way in spurring the Nigerian side past the group stage.

With the ouster of Enyimba FC, Remo Stars, and Bendel Insurance on the continent, Nigeria’s continental hope rests with Rivers United.
