Enyimba in tricky Caf Confederation Cup group D against two North Africans

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Enyimba FC has been drawn in Group D with opponents from Egypt and Mozambique following a draw ceremony held on Monday, October 7, 2024.

The two-time African champions and Nigeria’s sole representative in the CAF Confederation Cup, will face two teams from Egypt, Zamalek and Al Masry.

The People’s Elephant is also up against Black Bulls from Mozambique in the same group.

Yet to win the CAF second-tier title, Yemi Olanrewaju’s side hopes to break the jinx riding on the team’s previous history in the CAF Champions League.

After numerous years of waiting, Enyimba became the first and only Nigeria team to win the CAF Champions League in 2003.

A year later, the team retained the title and won the CAF Super Cup on two occasions.

The above feats were achieved during the time of Governor Orji Uzor Kalu under the leadership of coach Kadir Ikhana and Okey Emordi.

Since 2004, the club has continued to search for continental titles despite winning the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on numerous occasions with former Nigeria International, Kanu Nwankwo in charge as the club Chairman.
