CAF CC: Enyimba on edge of continental elimination after draw with Al Masry

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent, Enyimba FC, is on the verge of CAF Confederation Cup ouster after a 1-1 draw with Egyptian side Al Masry in Matchday five in Uyo on Sunday.

The two-time African champions had to chase the game in the first half after going behind early.

Khaled El Ghandour set up Mohamed Hashem who put the visitors ahead in the eighth minute.

Two minutes into the second half, Ifeanyi Ihemekwele equalized for the Peoples Elephant from Divine Ukadike’s assist.

It could have been worse for Stanley Eguma’s side as the travelers were awarded a penalty in the 67th minute.

Mahmoud Hamada missed the resulting spot kick but Enyimba could not score the winning goal.

Zamalek’s 3-1 win at Black Bulls in Mozambique sealed their qualification from the same group with 11 points from five games.

Al Masry occupied the second spot with six points, while Enyimba moved to the third place with five points as the Black Bulls seats bottom with four points.

Enyimba will have to win their final group game against Zamalek in Egypt on January 19, 2025, to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter-final.
