Coaching Confusion Deepens at Enyimba as Abia Govt Appoints Emmanuel Deutsch

Uncertainty continues to surround Nigeria Premier Football League giants Enyimba International FC following the Abia State Government’s confirmation of Cameroonian tactician Emmanuel Deutsch as the club’s new head coach.

The latest development comes just weeks after Enyimba’s management unveiled former Crown FC boss Deji Ayeni as the club’s substantive manager, further deepening the confusion over the Aba-based side’s technical leadership.

Ayeni had been working behind the scenes since last year after a contractual dispute between the club and former head coach Stanley Eguma. However, he only officially assumed full control last week, overseeing his first match in a goalless draw against Barau FC in Aba.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the state government confirmed Deutsch’s appointment.

“The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has approved the appointment of Coach Deutsch Detchoua Gustave Emmanuel as the new Head Coach of Enyimba International Football Club, Aba,” the statement read.

According to the government, the decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at repositioning the club both technically and competitively.

“The appointment of Coach Deutsch Emmanuel is part of the strategic efforts to reinvigorate the technical direction of the club, strengthen its competitive edge, and lay a solid foundation for long-term success. He has served as Technical Adviser and Head Coach with reputable clubs in Nigeria and Cameroon, delivering impressive results,” the statement added.

Deutsch’s credentials include CAF A, B and C coaching licences, and he has previously managed Nigerian top-flight sides Abia Warriors and Sunshine Stars. His achievements also include winning the Nigeria National League (NNL) Best Coach Award in 2025.

With the unexpected announcement, questions now surround the immediate future of Ayeni at the nine-time Nigerian champions, as clarity over Enyimba’s coaching structure remains elusive.

Meanwhile, the People’s Elephant’s struggles on the pitch continued on Sunday as they suffered a 2–0 defeat away to Niger Tornadoes, marking Ayeni’s second official match in charge.
