CAF CC: Enyimba suffer defeat to Al Masry in Egypt

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Two-time African champions Enyimba FC started their group campaign at the 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) with a 2-0 loss to Egyptian opponent Al Masry.

A brace from Mahmoud Hamada ensured that the People’s Elephant would return to Nigeria without any points in their first group match.

Hamada put the host ahead in the fifth minute at the Borg El Arab Stadium, Alexandria.

He sealed the win with the second goal in the 74th minute to the dismay of Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent.

Al Masry moved to the top of the group ahead of Zamalek’s clash with Black Bulls.

Enyimba will next face another Egyptian side, Zamalek at home on December 8, 2024.

Yemi Olanrewaju’s side needs to go past the group stage to salvage Nigeria’s four continental slots.

Rivers United, in the previous two seasons, had maintained Nigeria’s four continental slots by reaching the quarter-final stage.

Enyimba remained Nigeria’s best team on the continent after winning the CAF Champions League twice in 2003 and 2004.
